Is there still a 30% federal tax credit for home solar?

No. The residential clean energy credit expired on December 31, 2025. Systems had to be installed and placed in service by that date to qualify. The investment tax credit for businesses is still available. If an installer is still quoting you a residential price with 30% credit math on it, that quote is wrong.

Does solar work in Michigan?

Yes, though it produces less per installed kilowatt than the same equipment would in the southwest. What matters is how your annual production compares to your annual consumption at the rate your utility charges. That is a calculation specific to your roof, and on some roofs the answer is no.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Twelve months of electric usage. A bill, a photo of the usage graph, or a data export from your utility account. That single input sets both the economics and, under Michigan rules, the maximum legal system size.

What happens when it snows?

Snow on modules stops production until it slides off, which is usually faster than snow clears from the surrounding roof because the glass is tilted and warms slightly. Do not climb up to clear them. A roof in January is dangerous and a rake will scratch the glass. Winter losses are already included in the production model.

Will solar power my house during an outage?

Not by itself. A grid-tied array shuts down during an outage for the safety of line workers. You need battery storage with the correct electrical design to keep circuits alive when the grid is down. If backup matters to you, say so early, because it changes the design rather than bolting onto it.

How big a system am I allowed to install?

Under Michigan's distributed generation program you can build up to 110% of the electricity you used over the past twelve months. Residential projects are capped at 550 kW; commercial projects can go larger. Consumers Energy and DTE both offer an alternative interconnection program with no size cap, which pays a lower rate for the energy you export — worth modelling if you have a large roof and modest usage. Member-regulated cooperatives like Great Lakes Energy set their own terms and are not bound by the state program.

Do I get paid for extra energy I produce?

You get a credit, but not at the retail rate. Michigan uses an inflow/outflow structure where energy you import is billed at full retail and energy you export is credited at a lower rate set by your utility's tariff. This is why oversizing works against you here.

How long do solar panels last?

Modules typically carry a 25 year production warranty and often keep producing past it at reduced output. The inverter is the component most likely to need replacement within the life of the system, which is one reason we favor microinverters, where a failure affects one module rather than the whole array.

Will solar damage my roof?

Not when the penetrations are flashed correctly. Improper flashing is the most common expensive failure in a solar installation, and it is a workmanship issue rather than an equipment one. Ask any installer what their workmanship warranty covers and whether roof leaks are specifically included.

Should I replace my roof first?

If your roof has less than about ten years left, usually yes. Pulling and re-setting an array to reroof underneath it costs real money. We check roof age and condition before quoting and will tell you if the project should wait.

Does solar add value to my home?

An owned, permitted, well-documented system is generally treated as an asset at resale. Leased systems and third-party-owned systems are more complicated, because the buyer has to assume the agreement. Keep your permit, interconnection, and warranty paperwork together.

Who handles permits and the utility paperwork?

We do. Building permits, the interconnection application with your utility, inspection scheduling, and follow-through to permission to operate.

How long does the whole process take?

The install itself is usually a small number of days. The full timeline is driven by permitting and utility interconnection, which vary by jurisdiction and by utility, and are the part nobody fully controls. We will give you a realistic range for your specific address rather than a best case.

My installer went out of business. Can you help?

Yes. We take remediation work on systems we did not install, including diagnosing underperformance, replacing failed microinverters, correcting wiring faults, and taking over monitoring. Whoever installed it originally is not our concern.

Do you install batteries on an existing array?

Yes. Battery retrofits onto existing systems are a normal part of what we do, including arrays other companies installed.

Do you do commercial work?

Yes, and we are pushing further into it. Commercial projects are scoped from your utility bill up, including demand charges and rate structure, and the federal investment tax credit is still available to businesses even though the residential version ended.

What areas do you serve?

Michigan. We are based in Allendale, and most residential work is in Ottawa and Kent counties and the surrounding communities simply because that is where we are most efficient. We install across the state, including the east side and the Upper Peninsula. For commercial projects, distance is not the deciding factor — call and ask.

Are you going to pressure me?

No. There is no same-day-only pricing and no high-pressure appointment. You can get a full design and a price without anyone coming to your house. If the numbers do not work on your roof, we will say so.
